Oldish one...

Ah, this one is an older one that I forgot to add.

There is also a video of a birthday party that was held at my house, but I have not had permission from everyone involved to post it online yet.

Our ship out here has some problems with it's propulsion, and thus we are headed for drydock, once we pick up all of our gear. So, is America worth visiting?

Finger update

So, how is my finger after two weeks?
I made a small video that documents the process of healing. It's back in fully usable function, thank you very much!

Missing my toys!

After a few weeks away from the sun and sand of Namibia, I am really starting to miss it. So, I was going through some old video clips from last year when I discovered a clip of me thundering down the beach North of Walvis Bay in my 1980 Yellow Range Rover V8. It's heavily modified, and a treat in the summer. So, I just HAD to re-cut the clip and put it up on youtube.

The first song playing is "Amnesia" by Roots of Rebellion. It's available at Magnatune.com.
The second song is the last half of "Star dot star" by Five Star Fall. Also available at Magnatune.com

I started licensing music from the end of last year specifically to use in my video clips. There is a short video in the works where I talk about this and some other issues of music online....
I have never made a talking head video before, so it is a learning experience....

Here, then is the video:

Sorcerer Linux

I have been messing with my operating system of choice all day again. For those readers not in the know, it is Sorcerer, a sources based GNU/Linux operating system. Available at: http://sorcerer.aakin.net/

Anyways, what makes it special in my opinion is that it hands you the keys to your computer, and not in a fatherly: "Take good care of it" sort of way. The other way. :)

Everything is laid bare, and just begging to be tinkered with. Of course, with this amount of configurability, there is plenty of oppertunity to mess up, too. Still, I know most of the things I know about linux because I am running this special OS.
Today I was just re-compiling all my software again to see if any errors slipped in with updates and so on. It's is slightly reminiscent of a jigsaw puzzle where the pieces change shape over time. As is was working on the system I got this uncontrollable urge to mess with where Sorcerer stores files on my hard drive. ( I get these urges from time to time )

So, I have finally decided on:
dev size mount point Filesystem
/dev/sda1 2Gb none swap
/dev/sda2 10Gb / ext3
/dev/sda3 10Gb /var/cache ext3
/dev/sda5 10Gb /var/cache/archive ext3
/dev/sda6 1Gb /home ext3
/dev/sda7 64Gb /local1 ext3

These tight filesystems will make me a little more focused on where I put my data, as keeping that organised was always a little bit of a challenge. I have 26Gb just in photos! Eeeek!

I guess I might have to go delete some someday...

Small injury today...

But it hurts quite badly!

So... picture on the left is what a hole in my left index finger looks like. I was out working on the workboats, and we pulled off quite an interesting mission, and got thoroughly wet in the process.

So, I went to hide in the inside of the cabin of the workboat. Turns out that this was a mistake. With my skin nice and soft from being exposed to seawater for so long, it was only a small knock on a rough edge, but it was enough to skin off the tip of my finger, take some meat along and hit a small vein.

It simply took ages for the bleeding to stop. The medic on board our mothervessel even tried to stitch it closed, but it was a) too painful and b) not possible as he kept on hitting the bone inside my finger with his needle.

I finally got the wound to dry out by letting the warm air from my laptop blow across the wound as I was doing some video importing. :)

Video Test

This is just a video test. The video is from my YouTube channel.
I updated this one a little to the Sossusvlei video.

Getting in to the flow of things...

Just a blog post to get used to blogging every now and then, and to remember the website URL!

Work here is still carrying on at a frantic pace, and there is so much to learn about the new systems that I am involved in.

Hopefully with the next update I will be able to post some video and pictures, etc...

In the meantime, my videos can be watched on http://www.youtube.com/evorster.

First Post!

Ha, I always wanted to type first post!... Anyways, why a blog what with facebook and Myspace and all the rest?

Well, a blog is so much more distilled. No torrents of info, and a great read years on....
Some days a person just feels like writing, you know?
